Alistapart.com is one of the most comprehensive website with hacks and tutorials on how to create standards compliant components for use in web site/web apps. I have been visiting this website on and off and today i got an opportunity to spend sometime there. Some of the apps that we build on the OpenSocial used to take too long to load and would do too many too and fro connections with the web-server taking ages for for the first time load. Also while the end user used to keep waiting for the app , what she used to get to see was a broken representation of the html. We finally fixed that issue, by reducing the number of images that need to be loaded by using CSS sprites. Here is the article which explains in details on how they work : http://alistapart.com/articles/sprites . The article has a tutorial taking you through the process of implementing the same for your website.
