According to the report, the country has immense Renewable Energy (RE) potential, which, if harnessed, can help it control its emissions, without compromising on its economic growth, and also bridge the supply deficit to an extent. The sector-wise break of the total RE potential in India is - wind energy (48,561 MW); small hydro power (15,000 MW); and Biomass (120-150 million tonnes of surplus biomass per year can be converted into 16,000MW).

Most funds in India were unable to go the distance because they did not have cash. Many thought they would raise second funds, but the Internet bust denied them a chance. Bangalore-based Jumpstartup, which specialised in seed funding, is a classic example. “The next round of funding was simply not available because all the others had shut shop,” recalls founding partner Sanjay Anandram. Jumpstartup had a $45 million fund, which invested in 13 companies. It continued to invest till 2003, after changing focus to India-US start-ups. When the time came to raise a second fund, the founders decided to call it quits

Along the way, Balaraj and Chadha, both 38, have framed the contours of the VC ecosystem here. They have shown how to make old-style VC investing work in India. Their success has encouraged US Silicon Valley stalwarts such as Draper Fisher Jurvetson, New Enterprise Associates, Norwest Venture Partners and Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers to venture into India. “There is no doubt that they have not only built a successful venture business as an early mover, but also demonstrated how to expand the scope across multiple stages and sectors,” says Kanwaljit Singh, co-founder and Managing Director of Bangalore-based Helion Venture Partners, a newer homegrown VC firm.
